Organizations guide: twelve strengths-based growth opportunities for managers at every stage

12 Growth Opportunities for Managers at Every Stage

September 24, 2026
In short

A strengths-based guide for new and seasoned leaders: twelve areas where managers grow, reframed as opportunities rather than gaps. Your strengths are already here. Growth never stops.

Leadership growth is not something that happens once, at the beginning of a career, and then concludes. It is a continuous, evolving practice. The most effective leaders, whether newly appointed or decades into their journey, share one defining orientation: they remain committed to growing themselves, and to growing the people around them.

Research from the Center for Creative Leadership studied nearly 300 first-level managers and identified 12 areas where leaders most often invest their growth energy. These areas are equally meaningful for seasoned leaders seeking to deepen their practice, expand their impact, or lead with greater intentionality at a new stage.

Rather than viewing these 12 areas as gaps to be closed, Dr. Wayne Hammond's strengths-based framework invites leaders at every stage to see them as growth opportunities: invitations to name, build on, and apply the considerable strengths they already bring to their role.

"Growth is not a destination for early-career leaders. It is the daily practice of every leader who is truly committed to developing people, including themselves."

— Dr. Wayne Hammond, Flourishing Advantage

The twelve growth opportunities

01
Evolving relationships as your role changes
Whether you are stepping into leadership for the first time or navigating a new team, organization, or expanded scope, the way you relate to those around you is always worth revisiting. Leadership invites you to channel your relational strengths differently, shifting from peer to developer, from colleague to coach. The most effective leaders build influence through genuine connection, credibility, and shared purpose rather than authority alone.
02
Reimagining how you create impact
Every stage of leadership calls for a re-examination of where your energy creates the most value. Earlier in your career, impact came from personal expertise and execution. As your scope grows, so does the opportunity to multiply your impact through others. Seasoned leaders who continue to grow ask: am I investing my energy where it matters most, and developing others' capacity as intentionally as my own?
03
Unlocking your team's collective strengths
Great leaders do not simply build strong teams. They build teams that know and use each other's strengths. Whether you are leading a team for the first time or the tenth, there is always more depth to discover. Strengths-based leaders invest in understanding what each person brings, create challenges that stretch those strengths, and build the chemistry that makes a group more than the sum of its parts.
04
Building and deepening organizational savvy
Organizational awareness is not a destination. It is a practice that deepens with every new context, team, and challenge. For newer leaders, it means learning to read culture and navigate dynamics with growing confidence. For seasoned leaders, it means using hard-won insight to create pathways for their teams, advocate strategically for their people, and shape the culture in which they all operate.
05
Inspiring meaning and motivation
Purpose is one of the most powerful drivers of sustained performance, and the leader's ability to help people connect their daily work to something meaningful never becomes less important. Whether you are helping someone find their footing in a new role or reigniting engagement in a long-tenured colleague, articulating vision and reflecting individual contribution back to people is a strength worth developing at every stage.
06
Setting clear expectations and nurturing growth
Clarity and accountability are among the most significant gifts a leader can give their team. For newer leaders, this means developing the confidence to have direct, honest conversations. For experienced leaders, it may mean examining whether their feedback is genuinely strengths-informed and consistently applied. Holding people to high expectations while naming what they already do well is the hallmark of a leader who develops people, not just performance.
07
Becoming a strengths-spotter and developer
The ability to identify and name what is strong in another person, specifically and genuinely, is one of the highest-leverage skills in leadership, and one that can always be sharpened. Am I seeing the full range of strengths in each person I lead? Am I naming them with enough specificity to be useful? Am I creating the conditions in which people can grow those strengths?
08
Communicating across the whole organization
Leadership communication is never fully mastered. It is continually refined. As your scope expands, so does the complexity of the audiences you need to reach. The leaders who communicate most effectively across an organization do so from a place of values alignment and relational authenticity, the same qualities that work one-on-one, extended with greater intentionality and range as your influence grows.
09
Trusting others and multiplying your impact
The willingness to trust others with meaningful work is one of the most powerful, and consistently challenging, dimensions of leadership. For newer leaders, it means letting go of the comfort of personal execution; for experienced leaders, examining whether years of competence have quietly become a barrier to developing others. True delegation is not abdication. It is an act of belief in people's capacity.
10
Turning tension into connection
Conflict is not a leadership problem to be solved. It is a leadership moment to be navigated. How you respond when tension arises reveals your leadership more clearly than almost anything else. The growth opportunity is the same at every stage: approach conflict with genuine curiosity, hold space for multiple perspectives without rushing to resolution, and move conversations from positions to understanding.
11
Leading across differences with curiosity and respect
The richness of a diverse team is only fully realized when leaders are genuinely interested in how each person thinks, contributes, and experiences their work. Whether you are expanding your cultural competence, adapting your communication style, or examining your own assumptions, this is a commitment to continuous learning, and a high-performance strategy. Teams whose diverse strengths are genuinely included consistently outperform those that are not.
12
Holding complexity with confidence
The complexity of leadership does not diminish with experience. It tends to grow. The capacity to hold competing demands without collapsing into reactive decision-making is one of the most critical strengths in any organizational context. Strengths-based leaders treat that complexity not as a sign something is wrong, but as an invitation to draw on their values, relational grounding, and hard-won experience.

A note for leaders at every stage

Dr. Wayne Hammond's strengths-based resilience work reminds us that the language we use to describe people, and ourselves, shapes what becomes possible. When we move from "what's wrong" to "what's strong," we open pathways that deficit-focused thinking closes off. This is as true for a leader with twenty years of experience as it is for someone who stepped into their first management role last month.

Growth at every leadership stage requires honesty, curiosity, and the humility to recognize that the most powerful development is always ahead of us, not behind. The leader who says "I have already learned this" closes the door on the depth that lived experience, reflective practice, and a genuine coaching orientation can still unlock.

Remember

These 12 growth areas are not a list of shortcomings. They are a map of possibility: for the leader who is just beginning, and for the leader who has been at this for decades. The strongest leaders are not those who have arrived; they are those who keep growing.

Be patient with yourself and generous with others. Seek out mentors, peer coaches, and development communities that believe in your capacity to keep growing. The best leaders are not those who never struggle. They are those who use every challenge as an opportunity to strengthen themselves and the people around them.

A note for HR and Learning & Development leaders

Leaders at every career stage benefit from development environments that name and build on their strengths rather than cataloguing their gaps. This is especially important when designing programs for experienced managers, who may arrive skeptical of development initiatives that feel remedial, repetitive, or disconnected from the real complexity of their work.

Strengths-based leadership development means creating conditions where leaders, whether newly appointed or long-tenured, can see themselves clearly as capable, still-growing practitioners. That includes peer learning communities that treat experience as an asset and a catalyst for deeper reflection, coaching conversations grounded in genuine curiosity about what is already working, and development frameworks that honor the strengths leaders carry while creating space for meaningful growth.

When organizations invest in leaders this way, across career stages and not just at transition points, they build something more durable than better performance.

The organizational opportunity

When we invest in leaders at every stage through a strengths-based lens, honoring experience while expanding capacity, we don't just develop better managers. We build a culture where growth is expected, modeled, and celebrated at every level of the organization.
